Disney Newport Bay Club is probably our favourite of the larger Disney hotels. It feels properly like a resort rather than simply somewhere to sleep, with its huge lakeside setting, nautical styling and impressive public areas.

For us, its biggest strength is how well it balances everything. You are close enough to walk comfortably to the parks, there is a genuinely good pool, plenty of places to eat and drink, and the hotel feels noticeably more upmarket than Cheyenne or Santa Fe without reaching Disneyland Hotel prices.

The rooms are pleasant rather than spectacular, but the overall hotel experience makes up for that. We particularly like arriving back here in the evening, when the lake and Disney Village are lit up and the hotel feels a little removed from the busiest parts of the resort.

It is also one of the better Disney hotels for families of five because selected family rooms accommodate an extra person.

If the price difference compared with Sequoia Lodge is reasonable, we would usually choose Newport Bay.

Door to park

The walk to the parks

The route takes you from the hotel around Lake Disney towards Disney Village and then on to the two park entrances. It is flat and straightforward rather than a complicated hotel-to-park journey, and we usually find walking easier than waiting for the shuttle.

Where the checkpoint fits into the journey

You reach the Disney Village security screening on the way in, before continuing through Disney Village towards the park entrances. It is worth allowing for that extra stop rather than treating the published walk time as door-to-turnstile time.

The practical bit

The route is generally easy with a buggy because it is flat and paved. The bigger practical consideration can be the distance from your room to the hotel exit, as Newport Bay is a very large hotel.

What it feels like after a long park day

The lakeside walk is pleasant after park close, but the final stretch through a very large hotel can feel much longer after a full day on your feet. Room location matters here more than it first appears.

Our choice

Walk or shuttle?

We would walk. The free shuttle is useful in poor weather or when somebody is struggling with the distance, but for us the walk is one of Newport Bay's advantages.

What the rooms are like

The rooms are comfortable and reasonably spacious for a Disney stay, with restrained nautical Mickey styling rather than heavy character theming. They are pleasant rather than the main reason we would choose Newport Bay.

Living with the roomSpace, storage & family practicality

Standard rooms work well for four, while the Family Room is particularly useful if you need space for five. Storage and room practicality are generally good enough for a multi-night stay, but check the exact bed configuration of the category you are booking.

Worth knowingThe biggest drawback

The hotel is enormous. Two rooms in the same category can feel very different in practice if one is close to the lifts and lobby and the other involves a long corridor walk every time you leave or return.

How practical is it?

For families, Newport Bay works because it gives you more than somewhere to sleep. You can realistically come back for a swim or a break, there are rooms for five, and the hotel feels calmer than the parks without feeling disconnected from them. The trade-off is simply its size.

Characters

Meeting characters at the hotel

Character encounters take place in the hotel lobby area. Disney currently advertises meetings with Mickey, Minnie or friends, with the exact character varying.

Treat the hotel meet as a bonus rather than a fixed part of the day. Check the information in the hotel when you arrive because the character and timing can change.

The big advantage is convenience: you can meet a character without using park time. The queue can still build, particularly at popular times, so it is not automatically a walk-up experience.

Our advice: We would use it if the timing naturally fits breakfast, a hotel break or the start/end of the day, rather than leaving the parks specifically to do it.

Downtime

Is the pool worth using?

Nantucket Pool is one of the reasons to consider Newport Bay for a longer stay. There are heated indoor and outdoor pools, so this is a hotel where coming back for proper downtime can genuinely add something to the trip rather than feeling like lost park time.

Food & drink

Eating here in practice

There are two restaurants and a bar in the hotel. For us the useful point is that you can have a proper evening back at the hotel without needing to return to Disney Village, although we would still book any meal that matters to you rather than relying on last-minute availability.

A day staying here

Morning

Leave the room, make your way through what can be a very large hotel, then walk around Lake Disney towards the security screening and Disney Village. For Extra Magic Time we would allow a little more than the headline 15-minute walk.

Coming back during the day

Newport Bay is close enough that a midday return for a swim, rest or change of clothes is realistic. That is one of the strongest arguments for paying more than Santa Fe or Cheyenne on a longer trip.

Evening

After park close the route back around Lake Disney is easy and can be a nice decompression from the crowds. The only sting in the tail is discovering that your room is another long corridor away once you are inside.
